This is an original musical adaptation of Charles Kingsley's (1819-1875) poem, "Young and Old". It appears at the end of the second chapter in his well-known novel, "The Water Babies". For me, it's a sadly beautiful poem about the naïve optimism and opportunity of a young "lad" who heads out into the world, only to experience it's hardships and disappointments. Maybe this "lad", in all his endeavours and pursuits, hasn't foolishly neglected the one he has been fortunate enough to find love with in his youth, and is able to enjoy the richness of that companionship in his later years.
lyrics
When all the world is young, lad,
And all the trees are green;
And every goose a swan, lad,
And every lass a queen;
Then hey for boot and horse, lad,
And round the world away!
Young blood must have its course, lad,
And every dog his day.
When all the world is old, lad,
And all the trees are brown;
And all the sport is stale, lad,
And all the wheels run down;
Creep home, and take your place there,
The spent and maimed among;
God grant you find one face there,
You loved when all was young.
